This immersive tour app of the Variable Density Thinning study is a web-based application that you can run in your browser. It has been created with audio narration accompanying 360 degree photos taken at different locations and at different heights from the ground (6 feet and 27 feet, as well as above canopy drone images) in the Stanislaus-Tuolumne Experimental Forest. The tour (main content only) takes 21 minutes but can be paused at any point. Below is a description of what you will need and how to start the tour.
What you will need:
A good internet connection is recommended due to the size of the app. The initial loading time can take more than 10 minutes on slower internet connections.
The tour requires a certain level of graphics power and memory. Running it on a desktop PC or laptop with dedicated graphics card is therefore recommended. Running the tour on a phone or tablet will most likely not work.
If you are using a laptop, please make sure that your device is connected to a power source.
We highly recommend that you use the Chrome browser to run the tour (there is a known problem with Firefox but Microsoft Edge should also work). After opening this page in Chrome, please carefully read and follow the steps below before starting the tour.
Click on the three dots in the right upper menu bar in Chrome to access Chrome Settings. Under the Advanced Settings, select System. Make sure the box next to "Use hardware acceleration when available" is checked.
Please make sure that your computer's speakers are not muted, and adjust your volume to a level that you can comfortably hear.
We recommend an external mouse with a mouse wheel to make controlling the camera including zooming in and out as easy as possible.
After the tour app has loaded into your browser, you will be asked to put the app into fullscreen mode by clicking the square blue button on the right side below the app. To leave fullscreen mode, simply press ESC.
